ABOUT PRESS DIGEST

What is PRESS DIGEST?

PRESS DIGEST is a weekly condensation, in English, of news comments and features in the Ethiopian press.

PRESS DIGEST, in business since 1993, has grown into an all-papers-in-one weekly digest of the Ethiopian press: government, independent and party.

What is the editorial policy of PRESS DIGEST?

Strict non-partisanship has been and will continue to be the philosophy guiding the PD editorial policy. We say what has been said no less no more. We neither comment nor analyse. We could, if we wanted to, and we do have our views, but we leave it to our readers to make the comment, the analysis and the conclusion. We are able to achieve this goal by maintaining a principled equi-distance from the government and the independent presses.

Who are the readers of PRESS DIGEST?

Members of the diplomatic community, expatriates working in international organizations and transitional corporations make up the bulk of the PD readership. But a growing number of Ethiopian professionals with corporate responsibilities are also joining the ranks of the readership. They realize that as business leaders with hardly any time to read even a daily thoroughly, reading PRESS DIGEST is immensely worth their while and money. They can get a balanced view of the Ethiopian press and keep abreast with events in their country through PRESS DIGEST. Other members of PD readership are institutions of higher learning, research and cultural centres and human rights organizations at home as well as in Western Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan.

What does PRESS DIGEST contain?

Every PRESS DIGEST issue focuses on five to seven major issues. The WEEK"S FOCUS endeavours to give a bird's eye view of major events dominating the government, the independent and the party presses. The EDITORIAL ROUNDUP section is a quick and balanced survey of issues, views and comments given particular attention in the government, the independent presses and party papers. The informative section and indeed the heart of the PRESS DIGEST is what we call TIDBITS. Each TIDBITS item is a full-fledged article condensed into an average of 120 words or less.

PRESS DIGEST, though eminently a digest as the name indicates, never overlooks the need for an in depth look at some major events of the week. We do this in the POLITICS and ECONOMICS sections of our paper. Here, we do not condense articles drastically as we do in TIDBITS section, but rather abridge them into 400-500 words.

How is PD distributed?

Locally, we almost exclusively rely on our own courier service. No sooner does a PD issue leave the conveyor belt of the printing machine than it is snatched away by our couriers for instant distribution. Equipped with nimble, light motor cycles, our couriers crises-cross the city on Thursday mornings and afternoons and deliver the paper to our readers on the same day. Overseas readers receive their printed copies by mail if they want to, but otherwise, they get it online from Press Digest's website at:
